NEW LONDON, CT -- In a rollercoaster of a match, the 10th ranked Amherst College women's soccer team scored four goals against Conn College in a great team effort to give the Mammoths a 4-3 victory Tuesday night.
The Mammoths will face Bates College this Saturday at 12 p.m. on Hitchcock Field.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst opened the scoring with
Patience Kum getting on the end of a long ball from
Fiona Bernet and dribbling by two players in the fifth minute to put the Mammoths up 1-0. At the 7:14 mark,
Liza Katz drew a foul in the box and
Abby Schwartz calmly put the penalty kick away to give the Mammoths a 2-0 lead.
* With 20 seconds remaining in the half, Connecticut College's Ella Gazo connected to a corner kick and the Camels brought the tally to 2-1 Mammoths to end the first half.
* Just under ten minutes into the second half, the Camels equalized on another corner kick, with Clare Mulvihill netting the top right corner with her head.
* The Mammoths immediately responded with a high press and intensity to regain the lead. After 10 minutes of hard work, a gorgeous ball from sophomore
Ella Johnson put
Abby Schwartz in behind the Camels' defense, where she outran two defenders and slotted the ball past the keeper to regain the lead, 3-2.
Six minutes later, Katie O'Riley received the ball at the top of the D, played a slotted ball for
Patience Kum on the right of the eighteen, and wKum quickly got it off her foot and to freshman
Precious Novidzro who buried it in the back of the net to put the Mammoths up two goals.
In the last ten minutes, a Mammoth miscommunication in the box led to an own goal, making the final score of the match 4-3 Amherst.
BY THE NUMBERS:
Amherst out shot the camels with 24 (13 on frame) shots to Conn's 8 (5 on frame), while Conn led in corner kicks, 3-0.
The Mammoths are now 5-0-1 in the regular season, 2-0-1 in conference play. Conn's loss brings their record to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC.
