MIDDLEBURY, VT. -- The Amherst College softball team suffered its second doubleheader loss in two days Saturuday as it fell victim to a pair of Middlebury College comebacks.
The Mammoths fell to 13-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference following the 5-3 and 8-5 losses to the Panthers. Amherst is home Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader versus Springfield beginning at 3:30 p.m.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths took a 1-0 edge in the top of the third inning.
America Rangel singled to center, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mia Castro and to third on a sacrifice fly by
Abby Moravek. Rangel scored on the next play when
Megan Taketa sent a base hit to left center.
* Dani Torres-Werra led off the fourth inning with a homer over the left-field fence to make it 2-0 for Amherst.Â
* Middlebury cut the deficit in half during its next at-bat. Kristyn Carroll singled to right center, before advancing to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Carroll later scampered home on a ground out by Megan Fox to make it 2-1.
* The Mammoths increased their advantage to 3-1 in the top of the sixth.
Rachel Lovejoy doubled down the left field line before later touching home on a Panther miscue.Â
* Middlebury respnded with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth, scoring twice on two-out singles to take a 5-3 lead.
* In the top of the 7th, Amherst put the tying runs on second and third with two outs after singles by Rangel and
Audrey Orlowski. Lovejoy hit a liner into left, but the Panther left fielder made a diving snag to end the game.Â
* Taketa and Rangel were each 2 for 3 for the Mammoths. Orlowski was 1 for 1.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
*Â Amherst came out of the gates strong in the nightcap, taking an early 2-0 lead. Taketa scored on a wild pitch, before a double to left by
Sadie Pool brought Torres-Werra home.
* Rangel walked to start the second for the Mammoths and later crossed home on an error to increase the advantage to 3-0.
* Middlebury cut the deficit to one (3-2) in the bottom of the second. A single to shortstop by Jordyn Johnson brought home Hannafey, before Jennifer Westphal touched the plate on a base hit to center by Lont.Â
*In their next at-bat, the Panthers took a 5-3 advantage. Fox belted a double that just hit the left-center fence, allowing Cece Ziegler to slide through home plate. Hannafey pinch-ran for Fox and later touched home when Papaleo doubled off the right-center fence. Later in the inning, Carroll singled through the right side to drive in Papaleo.
*Middlebury tacked on another run in the fourth when Papaleo laced another double to right field, scoring Ziegler to make it 6-3.
*Rangel blasted a triple to center field in the top of the fifth, cutting the Mammoths' deficit to one (6-5).
* Butler was 2 for 3 with a walk in the loss, while Pool was 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored.Â
