Mammoths sweep Florida DH, blanking Kenyon 8-0 and edging North Park 5-3

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Senior Sadie Pool had a tie-breaking 2-run homer run in the eighth inning of game one and drove in three more runs in the second game Tuesday, leading the Amherst College softball team to a sweep of North Park (5-3, 8 inn.) and Keynon (8-0, 5 inn.) at the Fortune Road Complex.

The Mammoths (3-1) are slated to face Hamline at 9 a.m. Wednesday and Loras at 11:30 a.m. as their spring trip continues.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths found themselves down 3-0 after the first inning of game one against North Park. Their rally began in the third with two runs. Abby Kong singled, took second on an out, went to third on a passed ball and scored when Rachel Lovejoy doubled. Autumn Lee's fly ball was then misplayed allowing Lovejoy to score the second run.

* The Mammoths tied it in the top of the 5th when Lovejoy ripped a solo home run to left center, her first of the season and the fifth of her career.

* In the 8th, Megan Taketa started on second. Jess Butler pinch hit and sacrificed her to third with a bunt. Pool, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the 6th, came through crushing a 3-2 pitch over the fence for a two-run homer, her first of the season and second of her career.

* Dani Torres Werra earned the win with four hitless innings of relief. She walked one and fanned seven over the course of her outing, retiring the final nine batters she faced after a lead-off walk in the bottom of the sixth.

* Kong went 2 for 3 for the Mammoths, while Lovejoy was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Game 2

* Scoreless after two, Amherst struck for a one in the third, two in the fourth and five in the bottom of the fifth to mercy-run Keynon College.

* Taketa singled to center leading off the frame and stole second. An out later, Lee scored her with an RBI-single to center. In the fourth, America Rangel led off with a single and stole second, scoring on Pool's single to center. Pool stole second and third before Abby Moravak lined an RBI-single to center for the 3-0 lead.

* In the fifth, Pool had a big two-run double. Senior Audrey Orlowski ended the game with a single to right that scored Olivia Aitkin.

* Moravek and Orlowski combined on the 1-hit shutout. Moravek earned her first collegiate victory by throwing four hitless innings to start the game. She worked her way around four base on balls by striking out seven.

* Pool was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI. Rangel was 2 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Taketa was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
