AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore guard
Kori Barach scored 24 points as the Amherst College women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 64-45 win over Bowdoin College in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.
The win clinched the sixth seed for the Mammoths in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament as Amherst improved to 17-7 overall and concluded the NESCAC slate with a 5-5 mark to finish in a four-way tie for fourth place. The Mammoths will now visit third-seeded Trinity for a NESCAC quarterfinal game on Saturday, Feb. 18.
The Polar Bears fell to 15-9 overall and wrapped up conference play at 4-6, earning the eighth seed in the NESCAC Tournament.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The game went back and forth early on with seven lead changes in the first six minutes, but the Mammoths closed the first quarter with 13 unanswered points to go up by a 23-11 margin when Barach knocked down a jumper in the final minute.
* The Mammoths continued to build their lead in the second quarter thanks in large part to first-year guard
Anna Tranum, who scored 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter, shooting 5-of-5 from the floor in the period. Sophomore forward
Alix Stuart scored in the final minute of the second to give Amherst a 42-24 halftime lead.
* The Polar Bears put together their best quarter in the third, scoring six unanswered points to cut the Amherst lead to 13, but a Barach layup in the final seconds gave the Mammoths a 51-26 lead headed into the fourth.
* Senior guard Sela Kay hit a pair of free throws to bring Bowdoin back within 11 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Mammoths followed with an 11-0 run to stymie any further Bowdoin comeback attempt and put the game out of reach.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Barach shot 10-of-15 from the floor to lead the Mammoths with 24 points along with 3 steals.
* Tranum scored 12 points on 6-of-9 field-goal shooting.
* Junior guard
Reeya Patel tallied 11 points and 8 rebounds.
* Stuart blocked five shots for the Mammoths.
* Sophomore guard Sydney Jones led the Polar Bears with 20 points, while senior guard Annie Boasberg grabbed 10 rebounds.
* The Mammoths shot 51 percent (26-of-51) from the floor while holding the Polar Bears to just 30 percent (16-of-54) shooting.
* Rebounds were even at 32-32.
