DAYTONA BEACH, FL. -- Sophomore
Anna Tranum had 17 points and seven rebounds Saturday to help the Amherst College women's basketball team to a 67-34 victory over Clarkson University at the Ocean Center as the Mammoths played their final game at the Florida Sunshine Shootout.
The Mammoths improved to 9-0 on the season. They are off until Wednesday when they take the short trek to Elms College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths jumped out to a 15-12 lead after the first 10 minutes as Tranum struck for nine of her 17 points in the first quarter, going 4 of 7 from the floor and sinking one of two attempts from the foul line.
* Amherst led 20-18 mid-way through the second stanza, but managed to go on an 11-2 run to close the half with a 31-20 advantage. It was 22-18 when
Sylvia Liddle grabbed a defensive board and quickly fired the ball to
Reeya Patel who drove the court for a lay-up and a six-point lead. Following a Clarkson turnover, the pair switched roles as a Patel pass led to a Liddle basket down low and a 26-18 lead. A short jumper from
Kori Barach with 1:28 remaining made it 28-18 and the junior closed the half by nailing a three-point shot with one second on the clock for the 11-point Amherst lead.
* The Mammoths dominated the third quarter and built an insurmountable lead on the strength of eight points from
Alix Stuart, who went 4 for 4 from the field. However it was Barach and
Annie McCarthy who had early impact in the quarter each scoring five points over the first 3:23 minutes to help push the Mammoths lead to 16 points at 41-25. Stuart then scored three straight buckets from inside the paint, the second one coming off a Patel steal and pass, as Amherst closed the quarter with a 13-0 un and led 51-25.
* Senior
Abbey Skinner played all 10 minutes of the final quarter, scoring six points and adding five rebounds while going 3 for 3 from the floor. Classmate
Nicole Stanford added four points as the Mammoths cruised to the 67-34 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths held Clarkson to just 21.6 (11 for 51) shooting from the floor and out rebounded the Bears 43-30.
* Amherst had 11 steals in the win, two each from four players (
Macie Nugent,
Brooke Ingemi, Barach and Patel), which led to 19 Clarkson turnovers. The Mammoths turned the ball over just 10 times in the win.
* Barach finished with 13 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds in only 20 minutes on the court. Stuart notched 10 points and 5 rebounds.
