Mammoths shine bright in 67-34 win over Clarkson at Florida Sunshine Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. -- Sophomore Anna Tranum had 17 points and seven rebounds Saturday to help the Amherst College women's basketball team to a 67-34 victory over Clarkson University at the Ocean Center as the Mammoths played their final game at the Florida Sunshine Shootout.

The Mammoths improved to 9-0 on the season. They are off until Wednesday when they take the short trek to Elms College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out to a 15-12 lead after the first 10 minutes as Tranum struck for nine of her 17 points in the first quarter, going 4 of 7 from the floor and sinking one of two attempts from the foul line.

* Amherst led 20-18 mid-way through the second stanza, but managed to go on an 11-2 run to close the half with a 31-20 advantage. It was 22-18 when Sylvia Liddle grabbed a defensive board and quickly fired the ball to Reeya Patel who drove the court for a lay-up and a six-point lead. Following a Clarkson turnover, the pair switched roles as a Patel pass led to a Liddle basket down low and a 26-18 lead. A short jumper from Kori Barach with 1:28 remaining made it 28-18 and the junior closed the half by nailing a three-point shot with one second on the clock for the 11-point Amherst lead.

* The Mammoths dominated the third quarter and built an insurmountable lead on the strength of eight points from Alix Stuart, who went 4 for 4 from the field. However it was Barach and Annie McCarthy who had early impact in the quarter each scoring five points over the first 3:23 minutes to help push the Mammoths lead to 16 points at 41-25. Stuart then scored three straight buckets from inside the paint, the second one coming off a Patel steal and pass, as Amherst closed the quarter with a 13-0 un and led 51-25.

* Senior Abbey Skinner played all 10 minutes of the final quarter, scoring six points and adding five rebounds while going 3 for 3 from the floor. Classmate Nicole Stanford added four points as the Mammoths cruised to the 67-34 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:
