AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior
Declan Sung scored his first two goals of the season Tuesday night, leading the 16th-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Trinity College in its Mammoths' regular-season finale on Gooding Field.
Amherst finished the regular season with a 10-2-3 record and a 6-1-3 mark in NESCAC play. The Mammoths earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 2023 NESCAC Men's Soccer Tournament and will host No. 7 seeded Wesleyan University Saturday, October 28th at 12 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths came out pressuring the Bantams right away as just under four minutes in when
Ignacio Cubeddu collected a Trinity clear near mifdield, spun to his right, pushed the ball between two defenders and unleashed a rocket of a shot toward the Bantam goal that seemed to bend to the right at the last moment, causing Trinity goalkeeper Nate Dyott to make a diving save to his left.
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Sung's long thrown in from the right sideline went through the hands of Dyott and then bounced off a Bantam defender. back to the top left-hand corner of the box. Sung followed his own throw and collected the ball, grounding it with his torso before dribbling to his left and chipping a shot into the far left-hand corner of the goal with his left foot.
* In the game's 29th minute, Amherst doubled its lead. Cubeddu sent a long pass from the Mammoths' side of the field.
Mohammed Nuhu ran onto the ball, cut toward the goal, dribbled into the box and perfectly placed a shot past Dyott for a 2-0 lead.
* That was the score at halftime, but the Mammoths were not done. Sung's second goal came in the 67th minute as he received a pass from
Luka Ohadike in the Trinity box and fired a shot to the short side for a 3-0 edge.
* The final goal came from first-year
Lucas Liu, who received a pass from Ohadike on the right side and was able to push a shot passed the keeper.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst finished with a 14-8 edge in shots, 8 to 4 in shots on goal.
