AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore Lulu Fickes made a career-high 5 saves Saturday and the 7th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team had goals from
Patience Kum,
Abby Schwartz and
Brooke Ingemi en route to a 3-0 shutout of NESCAC rival Hamilton College on Gooding Field.
Amherst improved to 12-1-1 overall with the win, 7-1-1 in conference play. Hamilton is now 7-4-3 and 3-4-3 in the NESCAC. Amherst will play host to Trinity College Tuesday night at 6 p.m. back on Gooding Field to wrap up the regular-season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* It was Senior Day for the Mammoths as they celebrated the careers of six student-athletes -- Schwartz,
Ally Deegan,
Mika Fisher,
Liza Katz,
Gigi Golden and
CiCi Curran. Their class has a career-winning percentage of .860, the highest of any class in program history.
* Amherst got on the board 3 minutes and 8 seconds into the contest after Ingemi was brought down by a collision that resulted in a foul call on Hamilton.
Carter Hollingsworth took the free kick about seven yards inside of midfield and placed a beautiful serve into the box that found Kum's head near the 6. The conference's leading goal scorer directed the ball slightly back to her right and over the Hamilton goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. It was Kum's conference-leading 12th goal of the season.
* With 17:11 remaining in the first half, the Mammoths doubled their lead.
Kate Quigley started the play by slotting a ball down toward the Hamilton end line, where Schwartz ran onto it. Surrounded by three Continental defenders, Schwartz somehow dribbled through the blockade to create a sharp-angle shot for herself to the left of the goal. She rocketed a shot that beat the Continental keeper high on the short side for ehr seventh goal of the season.
* Only 2:21 into the second stanza, it was 3-0 Amherst. Quigley once again started the play with a throw-in from the left sideline to Precious Novidro. Novideo tapped the ball back to Quigley, who quick first step to the left got her around a Hamilton defender and had her racing toward the goal. Sge delivered a left-footed pass out front that Ingemi won, quickly firing a shot into the open right side of the goal.
* A pair of defensive plays stood out in the second half as well, with Hollingsworth making a nice defensive stop on a run by Hamilton. With 34 minutes to go, Hamilton's Olivia Zubarik fired a shot from 35 yards out that connected with the right post and bounced back to the left. Mammoth back
Charlotte Huang outraced a Continental to the rebound and cleared it seconds before a mighty collision that left the Continentals with another foul call.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst held a 25-11 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in cornerkick opportunities.
* Kum was credited with the game-winning goal, her conference-leading fifth of the season.
