AMHERST, Mass. -- It was a bountiful day for the 7th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team Saturday -- plenty of goals, shots and cornerkicks -- as the Mammoths cruised to an 8-0 victory over Rhode Island College behind 2 goals from senior
Ally Deegan.
The Mammoths improved to 10-1-1 on the season. They will host Vermont State University Castleton Sunday at 2 p.m. back on Hitchcock Field. The Anchormen fell to 7-5-2.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The game was scoreless until 19:12 remained in the first half. Senior
Liza Katz was tripped up on the right side of the RIC box and Amherst was awarded a penalty kick that senior
Abby Schwartz calmly deposited into the goal for the one-goal advantage.
* Schwartz set up the next tally as well, collecting a ball at the top of the box, cutting to her right around a Anchorman defender and turning to fire a low shot on goal. RIC keeper Chloe Angelone made the initial stop but the rebound bounced to the left and Deegan won the race to it, burying a shot into the left side of the goal for a 2-0 Amherst lead with 10:10 remaining in the half.
* First-year
Catherine McDonald was next, firing a shot that was blocked, collecting the ball again off a failed clear in the box and chipping a shot into the right side panel for a 3-0 lead. It was her first collegiate goal.
* Just 1:17 remained in the half when Katz made it 4-0, chasing a ball down on the right side of the RIC box, dribbling it down to near the end line and turning to fire a shot back to the left at a difficult angle. The shot sailed across the goalmouth and found the far left side panel for the four-goal lead.
* Amherst had a 28-1 edge in shots in the first half, and the Mammoths were able to maintain their intensity in the second 45 minutes as well, equalizing that effort with another 28 shots to the Anchormen's one to finish with a 56-2 advantage in the shot category.
* The Mammoths went up 5-0 just 1:39 into the second stanza when
Fiona Bernet lined up a cornerkick from the right side. Her boot into the box found the head of
Charlotte Huang, who headed it back toward the center of the box where sophomore
Halle Hanna was there to one-time it out of the air with her right foot, flicking it past the keeper.
* Deegan's second goal made it 6-0 and goals from Bernet -- off a header in the box after a great serve from
Charlotte McGuire --and
Patience Kum, accounted for the final score.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths finished with 32 shots on goal two RIC's 2. They created 11 cornerkicks to the visitors 1.
* RIC keepers combined for 24 savs in the game.
Katya Besch and
LuLu Fickes each had one save for the Mammoths.
