#15 Amherst defeats Williams, 60-57, to open NESCAC play

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – First-year Sylvia Liddle scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Amherst College women's basketball team to a 60-57 win over archrival Williams College on Friday night in the NESCAC opener for both teams at Chandler Gymnasium.

The Mammoths, ranked 15th in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll and 10th in the WBCA poll, improved to 10-2 overall with the win while the Ephs saw their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-5. The defending Little Three champion Mammoths also improved to 2-0 in the Little Three this season with their 32nd straight win in Little Three play, a streak that dates back to 2014.

The Mammoths are back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 7) at 3 p.m., visiting Middlebury for another NESCAC tilt.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The two teams traded baskets for most of the first quarter until the score was tied at 10-10 when Williams sophomore Cortland McBarron broke the pattern with a pair of free throws and a field goal to give the Ephs a 14-10 lead before a three from Devin Biesbrock in the final seconds of the first quarter put Williams up, 17-13.

* The Ephs took their largest lead of the game when senior Mia Holtze hit a three a minute into the second quarter to give Williams a 20-13 advantage, but the Mammoths followed with a 12-1 run, taking the lead on a layup from first-year Anna Tranum before a jumper from junior Reeya Patel gave the Mammoths a 25-21 lead with 4:24 to play in the second quarter.

* The Ephs scored six straight points of their own and the lead changed five more times before halftime. Williams took a 31-30 lead to the break thanks to a last-minute jumper from sophomore Arianna Gerig.

* Liddle opened the third quarter with a personal 9-1 run, scoring all of Amherst's points in that stretch to give the Mammoths a 39-32 lead, their largest of the game, after hitting a three with 5:47 on the clock.

* The Ephs answered with a 10-2 run, reclaiming the lead on a Gerig layup and taking a 42-41 lead at the end of the third.

* The fourth quarter was another back-and-forth affair. After Gerig made a pair of free throws to give Williams a three-point lead midway through the final frame, sophomore Kori Barach hit a three for the Mammoths to tie the game at 52-52. A 6-0 run in the final minute of the game gave the Mammoths the win as sophomore Maya Cwalina made a layup followed by a pair of free throws each from Tranum and Patel.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Liddle led three Mammoths in double figures as Cwalina scored 13 points and Barach tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
