Mammoths fall at home to Continentals, 50-47

AMHERST, Mass. -- Emma Sehring's lay-up with 14 seconds left Saturday afternoon helped lift Hamilton College to a 50-47 win over the Amherst College women's basketball team in LeFrak Gym.

The Mammoths had rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to take the lead twice down the stretch, but Kori Barach's desperation three-pointer banged off the rim at the game's final buzzer. The loss left Amherst at 13-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Hamilton improved to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in NESCAC play.

Amherst plays at SUNY-Polytechnic Tuesday at 5 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths trailed 33-23 mid-way through the third quarter after starting the stanza 0 for 6 from the field with three turnovers. Kori Barach led the Mammoths back with back-to-back jumpers followed by a lay-up that halved the deficit. After a Hamilton bucket, Barach drove to the basket and was fouled, converting the three-point play which left Amherst trailing by only four at quarter's end. Barach scored all nine Amherst points in the third quarter.

* Amherst stilled trail, 40-34, with 6:32 left when junior Reeya Patel nailed a three-pointer to halve the lead once again. Althea Hill answered for Hamilton with a trey of her own to bring the visitor's lead back to six. An Alix Stuart lay-up off a pass from AnLing Vera made it a four-point lead for the Continentals. Following a turnover, Anna Tranum hit a 12-foot jumper to cut the deficit to two. Another defensive stand that ended with a Tranum defensive rebound allowed the Mammoths to tie the game when Maya Cwalina converted from down low in the lane. It was 43-43 with 3:45 to go.

* Two Cwalina free throws gave the Mammoths a 45-44 lead with 2:06 remaining. After Taylor Lambo regained the lead for Hamilton, Patel's lay-up with 27 seconds left put the Mammoths on top by one again. Sehring answered 13 seconds later with her go-ahead lay-up for Hamilton. After a Barach missed trey, Maria Mercado sank two free throws for a 50-47 lead for the visitors. After an Amherst timeout with 1.8 seconds left, Patel inbounded to Barach, who got off a three from the top of the ket that did not go down.
