Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#4 Amherst falls to #19 Tufts, 2-0

AMHERST, Mass. – The #4 Amherst College women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season versus NESCAC rivals, the #19 Tufts University Jumbos, with a score of 2-0 Saturday on Hitchcock Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Prior to the game, Amherst and Tufts were the only two NESCAC teams with perfect overall records of 3-0-0. Both teams were high on confidence, but Amherst were the more dangerous team early into the first half. Within the first 25 minutes, Junior Abby Schwartz had a header effort which went wide of the goal, Junior Liza Katz fired a shot over the bar, and Senior Isabel Stern forced Jumbos goalkeeper Hayley Bernstein to make an excellent save.

* Against the run of play, the away side opened the scoring during an attack from the left side. Strong dribbling and passing from Tufts forwards brought the ball to the endline. Erin Duncan arrived and powered the ball first-time with her left foot into the far, bottom corner.

*The Jumbos substituted their goalkeeper at half time, and their replacement, Kaelin Logue was tested within three minutes of the restart with a shot from Sophomore Carter Hollingsworth. The two teams battled against each other and the score remained 1-0 until the 74th minute, when Tufts doubled their lead through a Caroline O'Neill goal from a free kick taken on the right side. Amherst fought back with a number of strong attacking moves but were unable to convert them into a goal before the final whistle concluded the game.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst now hold a 3-1-0 overall record (1-1-0 in NESCAC) for the season.

* The Mammoths' next match will be versus non-conference opponents, the Emerson College Lions, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Rotch Field in Boston.

* Amherst took 14 shots (6 on goal); Tufts had 10 shots (6 on goal).
