Lovejoy's 5 RBIs pace Mammoths past Williams 11-5

AMHERST, Mass. --  Rachel Lovejoy had a home run and 5 RBIs Friday to help the Amherst College softball team win the opener of a three-game weekend divisional series with Williams College at Cole Field, 11-5. 

Amherst improved to 17-6 overall with the win and 5-2 in the NESCAC's West Division while its rivals the Ephs slipped to 15-12 overall and 3-4 in divisional play. The two teams are back at it Saturday with a twinbill in Amherst that is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the first when lead-off batter Megan Taketa reached on a three-base error and score when Lovejoy lofted a sacrifice fly to shallow right field. The Mammoths broke open the contest with four runs in the top of the third. Taketa ignited the rally with a bloop single over third. Lovejoy followed with a long home run to left that landed 20 feet beyond the fence for a 3-0 lead. Sadie Pool and America Rangell later had RBI-singles in the frame. 

* Taketa led off the Amherst fourth with a stinging double off the fence in center field. She came around to score on Jess Butler's two-out, RBI-single grounded back up the middle. 

* Williams responded with three runs in its half of the fourth on a two-run home from first-year Sydney Fleming and a solo homer from Ronni Ramos that cut the Amherst lead in half. 

* The Mammoths came right back with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead. Sadie Pool led off with a double and Randi Finkelstein walked. Rangel sacrificed the runners to second and third. Talia Bloxham singled to the pitcher with no runners advancing to load the bases for Taketa, who laced an RBI-single. Lovejoy capped the inning by ripping a two-run double down the left-field line for a two-run double. 



BY THE NUMBERS:

* First year Dani Torres Werra picked up the win from the circle for the Mammoths, improving to 7-1. She went the first five innings and left with a 9-5 lead, allowing eight hits and five runs, three earned while walking no one and striking out four in the victory. Bloxham tossed two scoreless innings to earn her second save. 

* The Mammoths banged out 15 hits in the win. Taketa went 3 for 5 with four runs scored and an RBI. Lovejoy was 2 for 3 with a double, homer and 5 RBIs. Rangel was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Bloxham was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
