Mammoths salvage split with Middlebury with 8-0 Game 2 victory

AMHERST, Mass. -- Amherst College first-year Dani Torres Werra threw a 2-hit shutout and went 2 for 3 at the plate with 3 RBIs as the Mammoths' softball team salvaged a split of a NESCAC twinbill with West Division rival Middlebury, 8-0, Saturday at the Amherst College Softball Field.

The second game victory was shortened to 5 innings due to the 8-run mercy rule. Middlebury won the opener of the doubleheader in a 9-inning thriller, 8-7.

Amherst moved to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Panthers slipped to 7-6 and 1-2 in the NESCAC West.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths struck for three runs in their half of the first. Megan Taketa walked and stole second. Autumn Lee's single to left center moved her to third. Lee then stole second and Torres Werra followed with an opposite-field blast to right center that went for a two-run double. She scored on Sadie Pool's two-out single through the shortstop hole to make it 3-0.

* Amherst added two more in the second on a two-run single by Lee after Devin Wilderman led off with a base knock and Taketa laid down a sacrifice bunt but reached on an error.

* The Mammoths put the game in with a three-run third. Rachel Lovejoy ripped a two-run single through the left side of the infield that scored America Rangel and Talia Bloxham. Werra wrapped up the scoring with an RBI-single that scored Lovejoy.

* Amherst finished with 13 hits in just four at-bats. Lee was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Rangel went 2 for 2. Every Mammoth in the line-up at had least one hit. Taketa was 1 for 1 with a walk and scored three runs.

* Torres Werra allowed only two singles over five innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out three as she improved to 4-0 from the circle.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

* A two-out, RBI-single back up the middle by Middlebury's Megan Fox in the top of the 9th finally decided this one after Amherst rallied back from 4-0 and 7-5 deficits in dramatic fashion.

* Middlebury built a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, although Werra Torres halved that in the Amherst half with a two-run single down the right-field line.

*Down 5-2, Amherst scored one in the 4th and two in the 5th to tie the game. With two outs in the fifth, Taketa walked, stole second and scored on Rachel Lovejoy's single to center field. In the 5th, the Mammoths only had a single hit _ a Jess Butler double -- but a pair of errors and walks allowed them to ei the score when Taketa worked a free pass with the bases loaded to force home the tying run.

* Middlebury took a 7-5 lead with two runs in the top of the 8th, but Amherst rallied once again ints half when Lovejoy hit a line drive home run to left just over the top of the fence. With two outs and no one on base and down a run, Werra Torres stroke a 2-1 pitcher over the fence in center field to tie the game once again,

* However, Fox regained the lead for the Panthers with her huge two-out hit in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Panther starter Samantha Hausman came back to the circle and Randi Finkelstein worked a lead-off walk. Virginia Ryan sacrificed her to second and she moved to third with two outs, but Hausman stranded her there with a strikeout to end the game.
