Lee's walk-off single gives Mammoths sweep of Trinity

AMHERST, Mass. -- Autumn Lee laced an RBI-single just fair inside the left-field line with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Megan Taketa with the game-winning run and giving the Amherst College softball team a 3-2 game-two victory and a sweep of its doubleheader with Trinity College Saturday at the Amherst Softball Field.

The two wins improved the Mammoths overall record to 15-6 while Trinity fell to 15-8 overall. Amherst is off until Friday when it travels to Williamstown to begin a three-game series with rival Williams Friday at 5 p.m.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap after winning game one 4-2.

* With one out, America Rangel lined a singled to right. Taketa grounded a two-strike pitch to third, but an errant throw to second left two Mammoths on. Rachel Lovejoy then grounded a hard shot up the middle that bounced off a Trinity fielder and allowed Rangel to tie the scoring run. Lee followed with her shot down the line that easily scored the speedy Taketa with the game-winner.

* The Mammoth rally made a winner out of Talia Bloxham, who threw a complete-game, allowing only five hits over seven innings and, more importantly, walking just one while striking out six. Of the two runs charged to her, only one was earned. She improved to 5-3 on the year.

* Lee was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and Rangel was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Taketa went 2 for 4 and finished the twinbill 5 for 8.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Dani Torres Werra also hurled a complete-game in this one, matching her season-high with eight strikeouts while walking just one batter. She gave up eight hits and two runs, both earned, as she improved to 6-1 on the season.

*Amherst scored twice in the third to erase a 1-0 deficit and added two more in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Taketa got the third-inning rally started with a single to left center. She stole second and took third on a passed ball as Rachel Lovejoy walked. Lovejoy then stole second, drawing a throw as Taketa stole home to tie the game. Lee then rifled a grounder into right for a single and Lovejoy scampered home as the ball rolled under the right fielder's glove and trickled to the fence.

* In the Mammoths' fourth, Randi Finkelstein drew a lead-off walk and Sadie Pool singled into the shortstop hole. Bloxham executed a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved the runners up, and Rangel scored Finkelstein with a medium-range pop fly to left that was caught by the Bantams' shortstop. Taketa then brought home the Pool with a triple into the gap in right-center field for a 4-1 lead.

* The Mammoths' had six hits. Taketa was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Lee, Pool and Jess Butler has the other hits.
