Moriarty's game-winner lifts #21 Amherst to fourth straight win, 8-7 at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore attack Campbell Moriarty scored her first three collegiate goals, capped by the game-winner with 1:29 to go, to lift the Amherst College women's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Bates College in NESCAC action on Sunday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

The Mammoths, ranked 21st in the nation in the latest IL/IWLCA Division III Poll, improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in NESCAC play with their fourth straight win while the Bobcats fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC.

The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday (March 26), hosting reigning MASCAC champion Westfield State at noon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Bobcats scored first with senior attack Kate Loughlin's 10th goal of the season putting Bates on the board in the first 30 seconds of the game, but the Mammoths claimed the lead when Moriarty converted on a man-up opportunity to score her first collegiate goal and junior midfielder Sydney Larsen scored her sixth of the season just 16 seconds apart.

* The Bobcats scored three straight to close the first period with a pair of tallies from senior attack Dana Swartz giving Bates a 4-2 lead after the first, the only point in the entire game that either side led by more than one goal.

* The Mammoths scored the only two goals of the second, both on free-position shots, as junior midfielder Fiona Jones scored her fifth of the season and first-year midfielder Lauren Friedman scored for the fourth straight game to level the score at 4-4 at halftime.

* The two sides traded goals for most of the second half as every time Bates scored, Amherst responded to tie the game again. Senior midfielder Jordan Tveter gave the Bobcats the lead in the third quarter but Friedman answered with her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Tveter scored again on a man-down situation late in the third and Moriarty responded on a man-up opportunity early in the fourth. Bates first-year midfielder Trish Balser's goal was answered by senior attack Becky Kendall, who scored her 11th of the season to extend her goal-scoring streak to 10 games, dating back to the beginning of the abbreviated 2020 season.

* With the score tied in the final minutes, Moriarty took a pass from Jones and scored her third of the game to give the Mammoths their first lead since the first quarter. The Bobcats won the ensuing draw but sophomore defender Grace Wyckoff picked up a loose ball to give the Mammoths possession and secure the win.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Senior goalie Caroline Fischer made a career-high seven saves to earn the win for the Mammoths as Amherst held a 22-20 edge in shots and 16-14 advantage in shots on goal.

* With two goals today, Friedman has now scored multiple goals in four straight games.

* Draw controls were even at 9-9 with Larsen and Friedman each collecting 3 draw controls for the Mammoths. Larsen leads the NESCAC with 28 draw controls this season.
