CLERMONT, FL. -- The Amherst College softball team wrapped up its spring trip Saturday with two very different wins, edging Luther College 3-2 behind more power from
Randi Finkelstein and power pitching by
Talia Bloxham and run-ruling Rhodes College 12-0 behind a strong performance by
Dani Torres Werra and a hitting display from
Autumn Lee.
The Mammoths won their final three games of the trip to finish 6-2. They open the New England portion of their schedule Saturday, March 26 with a home doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Game 1
Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
Megan Taketa walked and, after an out, took third on a single through the right side by Torres Werra, who promptly stole second. With two outs, Lee ripped a single back up the middle to score Taketa for the lead. Werra Torres left the game before the start of the bottom of the third and Bloxham took over.
The game stayed at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth. With one out,
Danica Peterson struck out swinging but reached on a passed ball. That brought up Finkelstein, who had hit a grand slam on the same field earlier in the week, connected on a 2-1 pitch and drove the ball to deep center field where it cleared the fence for a two-run home run and a 3-0 lead.Â
Luther scored twice in the bottom of the fith and has runners on second and third with two outs when Bloxham struck out Sydney Schultz on a called third strike. The Norse threatened again in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Bloxham snagged a hard comebacker to the circle off the bat of Anna Forari to force a runner out at home for the second out. A wild pitch on the next batter allowed the Norse runner to break for home but a hustling
Jess Butler behind the plater found the ball quickly and rifled the ball to Bloxham at the dish in time for the tag out that ended the inning. Luther put a runner on second with two outs in the seventh, but Mammoth third sacker
Sage Innerarity reached up as high as she could to field a hard one-hopper and threw the batter out at first to end the game.Â
Lee was 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and Torres Werra 2 for 2. Bloxham improved to 3-1 on the season with 5 innings of solid relief, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out four.Â
Game 2
The Mammoths pulled away early in the win over Rhodes, scoring one in the first, four in the second and seven in the fourth to post the 12-0 victory.
Lee was 3 for 4 with two doubles,
Rachel Lovejoy was 2 for 2 with three stolen bases, while Finkelstein and Werra Torres were each 2 for 3. Finkelstein had two RBIs and Werra Torres three. Werra Torres improved to 3-0 on the season with four strong innings, allowing one hit while walking two and fanning four.Â
