Mammoths roll to 65-35 win over Colby in NESCAC Quarterfinals

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior captains Gabrielle Zaffiro and Dani Valdez combined for 31 points to lead the Amherst College women's basketball team to a 65-35 win over Colby College in the semifinals of the NESCAC Women's Basketball Championship on Sunday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths, seeded third in the NESCAC Tournament, won their 10th straight game to improve to 20-2 and advance to the NESCAC semifinals for the 14th consecutive season. Amherst will face second-seeded Tufts in a semifinal matchup on Saturday (Feb. 26) at 4:30 p.m. at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. The Mammoths are ranked ninth in the nation in both the D3hoops.com and WBCA Coaches polls and are the top-ranked team in Region I, one of 10 regions across the nation. The 11th-seeded Mules fell to 12-10.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

* The teams traded basket for most of the first quarter but a three-pointer and a layup from Zaffiro helped the Mammoths to a 12-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.

* The Mules pulled back within one in the second quarter but the Mammoths closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 26-17 lead to halftime. Valdez scored on Amherst's first two possessions of the third quarter to extend the lead to 13 points.

* The Mammoths shot 8-of-14 from the field in the third quarter to take control of the game as they outscored the Mules, 22-13, with Valdez scoring 10 in the quarter.

* The Mammoths scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to snuff out any late comeback attempt and held the Mules to just five points in the final frame.



BY THE NUMBERS

* Zaffiro scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-7 field-goal shooting and added 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

* Valdez scored 15 points, her seventh straight game scoring in double figures, and added 8 rebounds and 2 steals.

* The Mammoths shot 41 percent (22-of-54) from the field while holding the Mules to just 26 percent (13-of-51), the fewest made field goals Amherst has allowed all season. The Mammoths also forced 17 Colby turnovers.

* Senior Chiamaka Ubani led the Mules with 12 points.
