#7 Mammoths hold off New Jersey City University, 76-68, remain unbeaten

JERSEY CITY, NJ -- Sophomore Kori Barach scored a career-high 32 points Sunday, leading the #7 Amherst College women's basketball team to a 76-68 road win over New Jersey City University at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

Junior guard Reeya Patel added 21 points in the victory, which improved the Mammoths to 5-0 on the season. Amherst is back in action tomorrow night vs. conference foe Wesleyan University in LeFrak Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

Barach finished with a double-double, adding a team-high 11 rebounds to her career-high 32 points. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths led by six after one quarter, 11 at the half and by 21 mid-way through the third quarter, and never trailed in the game at any point.

* Maya Cwalina scored 4 of her 8 points in the game in that first quarter, helping Amherst build a six-point lead. 

* Over the next two quarters, the Mammoths would shot 62.5 percent (15 of 24) from the floor as it built that 21-point lead. Early in the second stanza, back-to-back threes by Knights Damaris Rodriguez and Jada Camacho brought the hosts to within one point at 19-18. 

* Later, Rodriguez, who finished with a game-high 33 points, hit another three to bring NJCU back within two. This time, Barach answered with a trey of her own with 3:22 remaining in the first half to make it 33-28 Amherst. A Barach defensive rebound then led to an Anna Tranum jumper that made it a seven-point Amherst lead. A pair of defensive rebounds led to two free throws from Barach and a Sylvia Liddle jumper that came with 1:35 left and gave the Mammoths their halftime lead at 39-28.

* The Mammoths led 42-35 early in the third quarter when it constructed a 13-0 run to build a 20-point advantage. Cwalini grabbed a defensive board off a missed three that led to a short jumper for Barach. A Tranum defensive rebound was followed by a Cwalini jumper. A Knights' turnover was followed by a Barach three-point basket that made iy 49-35. Patel took over, scoring four straight points, two off a lay-up from an AnLing Vera assist and then a lay-up of a Barach steal for an 18-point lead. 

* The Mammoths went 7 for 10 from the floor in the third quarter.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst finished with a 43-32 advantage on the glass. Barach led with 11. Patel had 8, and Cwalina and Liddle six apiece. 

* The Mammoths moved the ball around efficiently, collecting 19 assists on 22 field goals in the game, led by Vera's six assists. Barach had five and Patel four. 

* The Mammoths shot 47.8 percent (22 of 46) from the floor and 78.8 percent (26 of 33) from the foul line. Barach was 14 of the 16 from the foul line on her own.
