AnLing Vera scored a game-high 17 points and classmate
Kori Barach added 15 Sunday as the #9-ranked Amherst College women's basketball team rallied for a 57-50 victory over Rowan University in the final game of the Amherst Tip-Off Tournament.
Amherst improved to 2-0 on the season. The Mammoths are at Gordon College Wednesday at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths trailed by five points with 6:17 to go in the game. Vera nailed a three-pointer to make it a two-point game and after
Maya Cwalina came up with a big block on the defensive end,
Sylvia Liddle hit a jumper in the paint to tie the game. After a pair of free throws from Rowan's Mycala Carney, Liddle drained a three-pointer to give the Mammoths a 50-49 lead with 4:27 remaining. Rowan's Grace Marshall sank 1 of 2 free throws with 4:07 remaining to knot the game, 50-50, but that would be the final point for the Profs.
* Amherst's defense clamped down on the visitors, holding them to 0 for 14 shooting from the floor in the final 10 minutes. Cwalina gave the Mammoths a one-point lead with 3:37 left but hitting 1 of 2 free-throw attempts. Following a Rowan miss,
Reeya Patel hit a jumper in the paint for a 53-50 advantage. After a Barach steal, Vera went to the line and made 1 of 2 free throws for a four-point lead.
* Liddle and Cwalina came up with big blocks in the final minute before Vera hit a pair of freebies with 15 seconds left to close out the scoring.
* The Mammoths led 13-9 after one quarter thanks to four points in the final 25 seconds. A Barach lay-up made it 11-9 Amherst and Vera grabbed a rebound off a Rowan miss, drove the floor, and dished off to Barach, who laid a shot in as the buzzer sounded for the 13-9 advantage. The Mammoths were up by 12 at the half, 32-20, after outscoring the Profs 19-11 in the second quarter on the back of 50 percent (8 of 16) shooting from the floor. Vera notched 5 of her 17 in that stanza and Little had four points.
* Rowan would turn the tables on Amherst in the third, outscoring the Mammoths 20-10, as the Mammoths turned the ball over eight times in those 10 minutes. Nicole Mallard has five points for the visitors. Rowan would go 6 of 8 from the free throw line in the opening minutes of the fourth to build its five-point lead. The Profs finished 21 of 29 from the line in the game, compared to Amherst, who went 7 for 11.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths shot 39.6 percent from the floor (21 of 53) and limited the Profs to 24.1 percent (14 for 58). Amherst had 9 blocks in the win, 6 from Cwalina. Amherst committed 26 turnovers and the Profs 19. Rowan won the battle on the glass, 42-37.
* Barach added a team-high 9 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists to her 15-point night. Cwalina had 5 points, 8 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 4 assists in the victory. Liddle had 9 points and 3 rebounds.
