Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goals lift #13 Mammoths past Conn. College, 3-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore Patience Kum set up two late goals to help the Amherst College women's soccer team beat the Connecticut College Camels by a score of 3-1 on Gooding Field Tuesday evening.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* After only two minutes and five seconds had passed, Amherst earned a 1-0 lead. The Mammoths made use of the Gooding Field's smooth artificial grass turf surface in a beautiful scoring move. Sophomore Alyssa Huynh shimmied past a Conn opponent to open up the space to pass to Abby Schwartz, who was around 40 yards from goal in the attacking half. Schwartz takes a touch and looks up to see Isabel Stern sprinting forwards. Schwartz threaded a beautiful left-footed, diagonal pass for Isabel Stern to run onto, and place the ball past the goalkeeper rushing out from the goalline with a first-time, side-footed shot. The goal recorded Schwartz with her 7th assist of the season - the most of any player in the team - while Stern's goal was her third in three days.

* The Camels leveled the scoring during the early stages of the second half when, on the counter attack, Mya Johnson cut in from the left wing and powerfully smashed the ball just above the crossbar in the center of the goal. The goal followed two shots in the 52nd minute for the Camels in a short attacking spell against the overall game's run of play.

* Amherst regained the lead with only 11 minutes remaining until full-time.  Kum's fancy footwork enabled her to dodge past two Conn defenders and move with the ball towards the penalty box from the right wing. Kum then fired a cross which bounced off a Conn defender into the net as an own goal.

* In the closing minutes of the game, Amherst professionally kept possession of the ball near the left corner flag of Conn's defensive half to allow time to pass and eliminate any opportunity for Conn to make any last-minute attempts to equalize. From this area of the field, the Mammoths then scored their third goal of the game to eradicate any chance of a Conn comeback. Kum was involved again when she picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty box and dribbled past several defenders with ease. Kum selflessly laid the ball off to Abby Schwartz, who powered the ball with her left foot into the bottom corner, to the goalkeeper's left. Schwartz, Amherst's top scorer, has now scored 10 goals in 13 games.
