DALLAS, Pa. – Senior captain
Gabrielle Zaffiro tallied 16 points and 5 steals as the Amherst College women's basketball team used a 19-0 second-quarter run to pull away from Misericordia University for a 73-36 win on Sunday afternoon at the Anderson Sports-Health Center.
The Mammoths (13-2), ranked 11th in the nation in both the
D3hoops.com and
WBCA Coaches polls, won their third straight game and handed the Cougars (10-10) their third straight loss.
Amherst is back in action tomorrow night (Jan. 31) with a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup at Worcester State.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
* The Cougars came out of the gate strong, scoring the first five points of the game and building a 13-4 lead midway though the first quarter. Senior captain
Jade DuVal scored five points in a 7-0 run to close the first that brought the Mammoths back within one as Misericordia took an 18-17 lead into the second.
* Most of the second quarter was dominated by a 19-0 Mammoths run that put Amherst up, 36-22, at halftime. Zaffiro and sophomore guard
Reeya Patel each scored five as part of that run in which the Mammoths were 6-of-11 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
* The Mammoths continued to build the lead from there. Zaffiro hit back-to-back threes to kick off a 13-0 run in the third quarter that ended with a 29-point lead for the Mammoths as Amherst held Misericordia to 1-of-11 field goal shooting in the third quarter while the Mammoths hit 6-of-11 shots from the field.

AnLing Vera scored 13 points and dished 4 assists, while Patel finished with 11 points on 5-of-9 field goal shooting to join Zaffiro in double figures.
* Senior captain
Courtney Resch grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
* Sophomore forward
Abbey Skinner scored a career-high six points on 3-of-5 shooting while playing a career-high nine minutes.
* First-year forward
Alix Stuart scored the first five points of her collegiate career, shooting a perfect 2-of-2 from the field and 1-of-1 from the line.
* The Mammoths shot 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field, while holding the Cougars to 26 percent (14-of-54) shooting. Amherst held a 51-29 advantage in rebounds.
