Bates hands #3 Amherst first loss of season, 52-49

LEWISTON, Maine – Bobcats junior Meghan Graff scored 21 points to lead Bates College to a 52-49 win over the Amherst College women's basketball team in NESCAC action on Friday night at Alumni Gym.

The Mammoths (8-1, 1-1 NESCAC), ranked third in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll and second in the WBCA Division III coaches poll, fell to the Bobcats (10-3, 2-0 NESCAC) for the first time since 2007, snapping an 18-game winning streak against Bates, as well as a 10-game overall winning streak dating back to the previous season.

Amherst is back in action on Saturday (Jan. 15), with a visit to ninth-ranked Tufts for a NESCAC clash between two top-10 teams at 3 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • After the Bobcats opened the game with a 4-0 lead, the Mammoths scored three straight baskets to go up 6-4 on a jumper from Gabrielle Zaffiro. The Bobcats responded with a 10-0 run and held the lead for the rest of the game.
  • The Bobcats built a 13-point lead by the second quarter and took a 33-24 advantage into halftime.
  • The Mammoths made a comeback attempt in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats, 15-8, in the third quarter to get back within two points when AnLing Vera drained a layup in the closing seconds of the third.
  • The Bobcats led by five with four minutes to go when Dani Valdez came up with a steal and Reeya Patel finished the fastbreak to cut the Bates lead to 50-47, but Ariana Dalia scored to put the Bobcats back up by five and a Patel layup was the only shot the Mammoths hit in the final two minutes.
