Mammoths Total 21 Hits in Weekend Series With Williams

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College softball team powered 21 total hits, including three home runs, on the weekend, but were unable to capture a victory as Williams College walked away with three wins in the series matchup between the archrivals.

Amherst returns to the field on Saturday, May 1 when they travel to Middlebury for doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:00PM.

GAME ONE | Williams 2, Amherst 0 | Box Score
The sides totaled just a combined eight hits in a game one pitching duel, but runs by the Ephs in both the second and fifth bested the Mammoths' top of the seventh comeback bid as Amherst fell to Williams, 2-0.
  • Breaking the deadlock in the bottom of the second, Aly Granados got the RBI on what stood as the game-winning run as she singled up the middle following a Kirstin Mapes single and back-to-back walks to start the inning. The Mammoths retired the next three batters to get out of the jam.
  • Tacking on an insurance run in the fifth, a sacrifice fly by Kelly McGuigan sent Mara Kipnis home.
  • Looking to claw back into the game in the seventh, the Mammoths put runners on first and second with no outs via a Williams error and Jess Butler '23 single, but the Ephs logged the final three outs unscathed to get the victory.
Talia Bloxham '22 (2-3) threw 5.0 innings in the start for Amherst, giving up six hits and striking out three in the loss, while Audrey Orlowski '23 gave up one hit and no runs in 1.0 innings in relief. Mapes (5-0) earned the win for Williams, giving up two hits and striking out three in a complete 7.0 inning effort.

GAME TWO | Williams 10, Amherst 9 | Box Score
Plating runs in each of the first four innings, the Mammoths pushed the score to 6-0 before the sides traded solid at bats to make it an 8-4 game in favor of Amherst heading into the bottom of the sixth. Mounting a comeback, the Ephs ripped five hits to the tune of six runs to take their first lead of the contest and then held Amherst to a single score in their final at bat to seal the 10-9 victory.
  • Getting the Mammoths on the board right out of the gate, a homer by sophomore Autumn Lee in the top of the first gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • Extending their advantage to 3-0 in their next at bat, singles from Sadie Pool '24, Bloxham, and Megan Taketa '23 set up Rachel Lovejoy '23 for a bases loaded, two-out, two RBI single to left field.
  • Adding another score in the third, senior Alyson Plaman ripped a hit down the left field line to plate Butler.
  • Making it a 6-0 game in the top of the fourth, a Lovejoy home run to left scored two after Taketa bunted her way to first a batter prior.
  • Notching their first run in the bottom half, a sacrifice fly by Jenny Hickey made it 6-1 game before Williams added three more scores in the fifth behind two singles, a double, and a homer to set the score at 6-4.
  • Registering the Mammoths third home run of the nightcap, Randi Finkelstein '24 drove a ball to left center and over the fence to put Amherst ahead, 8-4.
  • Countering in the bottom half, a five-hit inning by the Ephs that included a three-run homer by McGuigan gave the home team their first lead of the game, 10-8.
  • Amherst looked to return the favor in their final at bat, plating a run to get within a score and loading the bases with two outs, however Williams was able to force a ground ball to secure the final out and the win.
Maddie Procyk '24 pitched 4.2 innings in the start for Amherst, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out one, before Orlowski tossed 0.1 inning in relief (three hits, three runs). • Another Mapes home run in the fourth secured the Ephs 8-0 victory.
