GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Ignacio Cubeddu scored the golden goal in the 108th minute to lift the Amherst College men's soccer team into the NCAA Division III National Championship game with a 1-0 double-overtime win over the University of Chicago on Friday night at the UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium.
The Mammoths (17-2-2) return to the title tilt for the second straight tournament and will now face NESCAC foe Connecticut College in the national championship game on Saturday (Dec. 4) at 7 p.m. in search of Amherst's second national championship after winning the title in 2015.
The game-winning goal came in the waning minutes of the second overtime. Bryce Johnson sent the ball into the box where it was headed by a Chicago defender directly to the right foot of Cubeddu, who fired a shot to the back of the net to end the game. It was the third goal of the season and second game-winner for the junior from Davie, Florida, and the first goal conceded by the Maroons (16-6-1) in the NCAA Tournament.
Mammoths senior goalie Kofi Hope-Gund needed to make only two saves to earn his eighth shutout of the season but both saves were spectacular. He made a diving save late in the first half and another diving save on a close-range shot in the second overtime just a minute before Cubeddu's golden goal. It was the 15th shutout of the season for the Mammoths, the most of any team in the nation.
The Mammoths put 4 shots on goal, 3 of which were in the overtime periods, and outshot the Maroons by a 13-6 margin.
