AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior striker German Giammattei scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Amherst College men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over SUNY Cortland in the NCAA Division III Tournament round of 16 on Saturday at Hitchcock Field.
The Mammoths (15-2-2) advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight tournament and seventh time overall, where they will face NESCAC rival Middlebury on Hitchcock Field tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 21) at 1 p.m. Middlebury and Amherst boast the two stingiest defenses in all of Division III, having allowed only 8 goals each all season long. Amherst's win snaps a seven-game winning streak for the SUNYAC champion Red Dragons, who bow out of the tournament with a final record of 18-3-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Giammattei put the Mammoths on the board in the 12th minute when Amherst was awarded a penalty kick and Giammattei converted.
- Giammattei struck again less than a minute later. As soon as the Mammoths gained possession again, Sebastian Derby got the ball to his fellow captain and the reigning Division III Player of the Year scored to put the Mammoths up 2-0.
- In the 26th minute, Giammattei provided the setup as he passed to fellow All-NESCAC selection Ada Okorogheye, who scored his fourth goal of the season and has now netted a goal in all three games in Amherst's NCAA Tournament run.
- Giammattei completed the hat trick in the 51st minute, weaving past two Cortland defenders to score his 11th goal of the season. It was the first hat trick of season for the Pinecrest, Florida, native, and the fifth of his career. Giammattei's 7 points in the game are a career high.
- The Red Dragons got on the board in the 58th minute when the Mammoths were whistled for a foul in the box and senior Blake Aronson converted the penalty kick, closing out his career with a goal in each of his final six games. Aronson's goal was the first scored against Amherst in over a month, snapping a 617-minute shutout streak that encompassed the last six games.
