Mammoths Fight Hard But Lose The Battle

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's soccer team welcomed Colby College once again to Hitchcock Field for a NESCAC quarterfinal matchup on Saturday. In a rainy and defensive battle, led by great goalie play from Kofi Hope-Gund '22 and Colby's Noah Jackson, Amherst had opportunities but ultimately fell in penalty kicks (4-3) to Colby. With the loss, the Mammoths are eliminated from the NESCAC tournament and await a decision from the national committee on a berth to the NCAA tournament.

First Half Highlights

  • In the tenth minute, Sebastian Derby '22 hit a header that went just high over the crossbar. The play developed off an Amherst set piece after a Colby foul.

  • Ten minutes later, Amherst had a flurry of shots on goal that ended with an opportunity by German Giammatei '22 that sailed high over the goal.

  • In the 40th minute, Amherst provided more offensive pressure and got another great chance to get a goal on the board, but an attempt by Ada Okorogheye'24 was saved by Colby goalkeeper Jackson.

  • Amherst got one more great chance before halftime as they dominated time of possession in the first half. A shot attempt by Laurens ten Cate '25 missed high and the Mammoths and the Mules went into halftime knotted at zero.

Second Half Highlights:

  • The second half opened with an exciting back and forth fraught with unfortunate missed opportunities for both teams. Colby's Paul Hawkins's shot missed the right post on a good look and Amherst's ten Cate's response just barely missed the same side of the opposing net.

  • Shots from Niall Murphy '25 and Okorogheye in the first fifteen minutes of the second period were met by Jackson and the score remained 0-0 as the rain fell down on Hitchcock Field.

  • In the 77th minute, Colby finally generated some offensive pressure, but shots by Ethan Fabricant and Ethan Franco were stifled by Hope-Gund.

  • In the closing moments of regulation, Amherst mounted a final push that included five shots on goal. The Mammoths could not find the nylon and the NESCAC quarterfinal went to extra time.

Overtime 1 Highlights:

  • Amherst began the overtime period with two shots on goal from Giammatei and Nico Kenary '23 in the first two minutes, but Jackson saved both opportunities and kept the sheet clean.

Overtime 2 and Penalty Kicks Highlights:

  • The only serious effort in the second overtime came from Nico Kenary, whose shot missed just wide in the 106th minute, officially sending the game to decisive penalty kicks.

  • Each player from both squads converted their attempts in the first three rounds, bringing the session to the fourth round of penalty kicks tied 3-3.

  • Mario Simones of Colby broke the tie, putting Colby up 4-3, and the pressure swung to Colby's Jackson who ended the game with a save and gave Colby a berth to the NESCAC semifinals.
