AMHERST, Mass. – Battling to a 1-0 double overtime win over Williams on Saturday, the No. 20 Amherst College women's soccer team followed up their clutch victory with a scoreless draw against Middlebury College a day later to close out the weekend with a 1-0-1 ledger.
With the outcomes, Amherst moves to 7-1-1 on the season and to 3-1-1 in conference play. The Mammoths return to the field this Saturday, October 9 when they travel to Little III rival Wesleyan for a 12:00pm bout.
GAME ONE: Amherst 1, Williams 0 (2OT)
- Capturing the double overtime victory in the 100th minute, clutch play by first-year Patience Kum caused Hitchcock Field to erupt in celebration following a leading pass from senior Julia Ralph from 15-yards inside Amherst territory. Sprinting towards frame, Kum beat three Ephs defenders to the ball at the top of the box before driving a waist-high, right footed shot past the Williams' netminder and into the nylon.
- Sophomore Mika Fisher (7-1-0) earned the win in between the pipes for Amherst, racking up five stops, while Chelsea Taylor made 17 saves in the losing effort for the Ephs.
- Amherst dominated up front in the matchup, owning a 28-9 edge in shot attempts and a 19-5 advantage in shots on target, while Williams held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
GAME TWO: Amherst 0, Middlebury 0 (2OT)
- The Mammoths had a solid scoring opportunity right out of the gate, but senior Alexa Juarez's header off a corner kick from Sophia Fikke '22 in the opening minute went inches wide right of the post.
- The Panthers strung together a pair of chances at the midway point in the first half, however Fisher was able to smother a rising shot from Olivia O'Reilly from point-blank range inside the box before grabbing a shot from Simone Ameer just below the crossbar with 18:40 on the clock.
- Keeping Amherst scoreless in the 72nd minute, Lucy VanNewkirk made a stellar diving stop on a blast from senior forward Natalie Landau, before Simone Ameer looked to return the favor with 16 minutes remaining in regulation, but her attempt rang off the crossbar.
- Fisher (7-1-1) earned the draw in net for the Mammoths, registering seven saves, while Lucy VanNewkirk made four stops in the deadlock for Middlebury.
- The Panthers owned the advantage in shots (17-11) and shots on frame (7-4), while Amherst held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Â
