AMHERST, Mass. – Seven different players had a hand in the Mammoths' three scores Sunday as the No. 20 Amherst College women's soccer team powered past Bates College, 3-2, at Hitchcock Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 9-1-1 on the season and to 5-1-1 in league play, while Bates falls to 2-6-2 overall (1-5-0 NESCAC). The Mammoths return to action next Saturday, October 16 when they travel to Tufts University for a 12:00PM matchup at Kraft Field.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Getting on the board in 7th minute, senior Ruby Hastie netted her sixth goal of the season to give the home team a 1-0 edge. Corralling a dish from Kim Zhou '22 to the right of the box, Hastie powered a right-footed shot off the keeper and inside the near post.
- Doubling their advantage at the 57:15 mark, junior Sarah Sullivan notched her first score of the fall as she lofted a shot from the bottom of the center circle under the crossbar.
- Cutting their deficit to 2-1, Charlotte Jones found nylon in the 65th minute as she headed a free kick from the right of the box from Cece Pilgrim into the bottom left corner.
- Potting what stood as the game-winner with 14:42 remaining in regulation, sophomore Abby Schwartz found nylon with assists from Patience Kum '25 and Sierra Rosado '25. One-touching a shot off the give-and-go, Schwartz drove her attempt past the diving keeper and into the bottom right corner.
- Getting back within a score with time winding down, Elizabeth Patrick made the most of a free kick as she collected her own deflection after sending the initial kick from just outside the top of the box off the Mammoths' wall and ripped a laser low, left side.
- Bates forced a save in the final five minutes, but Lily Houser's shot was as close to the visitors came to netting the equalizer late as Amherst captured the 3-2 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Mika Fisher (9-1-1) registered two saves for Amherst in the winning effort in goal, while Kat Nuckols (2-5-2) made three stops in the loss for Bates.
- Both sides took eight shots in the matchup, while the Mammoths owned the edge in shots on target, 6-4, and corner kicks, 1-0.
