Box Score SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The No. 10 Amherst women's soccer team put seven shots up in the second frame, but the Purple & White couldn't find the back of the net as they suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday evening to non-conference opponent Springfield, 1-0.
With the loss, Amherst falls to 2-1-0 on the season, while Springfield improves to 3-1-0 overall. The Purple & White return to the field to take on NESCAC conference opponent Middlebury, on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 12 p.m.
Both teams held each other at zero in the first frame of the contest, but Springfield dictated the pace holding Amherst to a 9-2 edge in shots. The Purple & White entered the second half attacking the net, doubling their shots in the first half right off the bat. The Pride's Meghan Sastram scored the lone goal assisted by teammate Amanda Wright with 5:79 remaining in regulation.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Amherst goalkeeper Chelsea Cutler '19 (2-1-0) recorded three saves in the loss.
• Springfield outshot the Purple & White 13-9 while Amherst edged the Pride 6-3 in corner kicks.
• Springfield controlled the pace of play firing four of their nine shots in a two-minute span in the opening stanza, but could not find the back of the net.
• With a scoreless first half, the Pride kept Cutler busy just 30 seconds after half time, but Amherst fired back seven of their nine shots in the frame.
• In the 84th minute, Sastram scored what deemed to be the game winner before the Purple & White had their final chances to score.
• Pressuring the Pride, Amherst earned a corner kick just a minute later that landed on the head of Rubii Tamen for a chance to score, but the ball was just wide.
• Containing possession of the ball, the Purple & White had three more chances including a corner kick by Delancey King with 48 seconds remaining, but couldn't score to tie the game.
