Doswell Nets 1,000th Point, Amherst Advances Past Bates, 82-29

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 6/7 and second-seeded Amherst College women's basketball team used a game-high and collegiate career-best 22 point, 12-rebound effort from Meredith Doswell '17, and Ali Doswell '17 scored her 1,000th career point to help spark the Purple & White to an 82-29 victory over seventh-seeded Bates College in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC Quarterfinal contest at LeFrak Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Amherst shot 88.2% from the free throw line, 46.8% from the field for the game and 40.9% from three-point range highlighted by three treys from Meredith Doswell. The Purple & White also held a commanding, 49-31 differential in rebounding, and outscored Bates 38-12 in the paint.
  • The stout Amherst defense held the Bobcats to just 19% shooting from the field and 13.3% shooting from beyond-the-arc.
  • Four players with double digit point totals led by Meredith Doswell's 22-point effort on 7-of-14 shooting. Ali Doswell added 14 points highlighted by 6-for-6 efficiency from the charity stripe, while Hannah Hackley '18 chipped in 11 points. Jaimie Renner '17 contributed 10 points and dished out six assists in the win.
  • Jackie Nagle '17 added eight points, three blocked shots and 11 rebounds, while Ali Doswell pulled down eight boards. Haley Zwecker '16 led all players off the bench with nine points on 4-of-9 shooting.
  • Bates, which was held to single digits in all four quarters, was led by Nina Davenport who scored eight points, while Allie Coppola grabbed 11 rebounds.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amherst opened up an early, five-point lead, highlighted by a swish from three-point range by Ali Doswell just 1:44 into the game to mark her 1,000th career point.
  • The Purple & White shot a sensational 55.6% from the floor in the opening stanza, and Meredith Doswell finished with 15 points as Amherst opened up a 31-9 advantage after 10 minutes.
  • The second quarter saw more stellar shooting (50%) by the hosts as Amherst ran its lead to 50-16 at halftime.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Purple & White put the game out of reach in the third quarter as Cheyenne Pritchard '16 canned a pair of deep strikes to highlight a 23-point period for Amherst.
  • The Purple & White then closed out the contest by scoring nine of the final 14 points of the game to seal the 82-29 win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Ali Doswell has now scored 1,013 points in her career and is the 16th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point milestone.
  • Saturday's 53-point victory marks the second time in three games that Amherst has posted a 53-point win as the Purple & White dispatched Middlebury College, 77-24 on Feb. 12.
