No. 4 Amherst Shuts Out Bates, 4-0

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – Four different Purple & White players tallied a goal as the No. 4 Amherst College men's soccer team scored twice in each half to shutout Bates College, 4-0 in Sunday's NESCAC matchup on Hitchcock Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 7-1-1 on the season and to 3-1-1 in league place, while Bates falls to 3-5-2 overall (1-5-1 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action on Oct. 5 when they travel to New England College for an 8 p.m. non-conference tilt, while the Bobcats return home on Oct. 8 for a 2 p.m. matchup against Connecticut College.

Amherst took a 1-0 lead at the 20:34 mark as Christopher Martin '17 gathered a ball off of his chest and played it to his feet just inside the right side of the box. Volleying a shot, Martin sent the ball into the bottom left side of the goal to tally his third goal of the season and the game-winner.

Senior Bryce Ciambella doubled the Purple & White lead less than four minutes later as he collected a pass from Rohan Sood '17 20 yards out and lofted a shot over the goaltender and just under the crossbar.

Preserving the two-goal deficit, Bates defender Julien Williamson made an impressive slide tackle feet away the net with 14:51 remaining in the first half to stop Bijan Zojaji '20 from sending a point blank shot towards the Bobcat goal.

Peabo Knoth opened the second half strong for Bates, ripping a shot from the top center of the box a foot over the goal, while Matt DiVite nearly made it a one goal game in the 58th minute, but his shot sailed just wide of the net.

Sam Malnik '18 recorded his first goal of the season with 27:44 to play to make it a 3-0 contest as he found the ball in a scrum in front of the goal and buried a shot into the low right hand corner.

The Purple & White took a 4-0 lead six minutes later as Weller Hlinomaz '18 booted a shot from the top right of the box into the left corner of the goal at the 68:23 mark.

Preserving the shut out, Lee Owen '18 made an athletic save with 15:43 remaining, diving to his right to smother Knoth's attempt from 15 yards out.
