Women's Soccer Roars Past Bates, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's soccer team scored twice in the first half, and once more in the second as the Purple & White posted a 3-0 win over NESCAC foe Bates College Sunday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 6-2-1 on the season, 3-1-1 in NESCAC play. Bates moves to 2-7-1 overall, 0-6-1 in league action. The Purple & White return to conference play Saturday, Oct. 8 when they host Hamilton College at 12 p.m. at Hitchcock Field.

Amherst wasted little time getting on the front foot as Delancey King '18 crossed a beautiful ball into the box that was played into the back of the net by Emily Hester '17 to give the Purple & White a 1-0 lead just 59 seconds into the contest.

Amherst, which outshot Bates 15-1 in first period, added to its lead at the 10:18 mark when Rubii Tamen '19 found Hannah Guzzi '18 who scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to give the Purple & White a 2-0 advantage.

Bates was able to keep Amherst from extending the lead further as goalkeeper Sarah McCarthy made eight of her 10 saves in the first half, while MacKenzie Kelly made a terrific clearance off the line on a shot by Tamen in the 17th minute as the hosts took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half Amherst pushed the cushion to 3-0 in the 53rd minute when Guzzi fired a shot that was parried aside by a diving McCarthy, but right to the feet of Tamen who deposited the ball into the top right corner to cap the scoring the contest.

GAME NOTES

  • Tamen finished with nine shots (five on target), while Guzzi placed three of her five shots on frame to help spark Amherst's potent offense.
  • The Purple & White held a commanding 25-7 advantage in shots, including a 15-5 differential in shots on goal.
  • Sarah DiPillo and Olivia Amdur registered two shots on goal apiece, while Julia Rosen added one. The Bobcats didn't get their first shot on goal until the 41st minute of action.
  • Amherst goalie Chelsea Cutler (6-2-1) made three saves between the pipes for the Purple & White, while Erica Sanders made two saves in 24:15 of relief work.
