Strong Second Half Paces No.2 Men's Soccer Past Hamilton, 3-0

CLINTON, N.Y. – The No. 2 Amherst College men's soccer team struck for three second half goals as the Purple & White notched a 3-0 victory over NESCAC rival Hamilton College to remain undefeated on the season Saturday afternoon at Love Field in Clinton, N.Y.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

  • After a scoreless first period saw both Amherst and Hamilton take three shots each, the Purple & White drew first blood in the 54th minute through Greg Singer '16, who scored his fourth of the season on the rebound of a saved shot on a direct kick to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. Christopher Martin '17 logged an assist on the scoring play.
  • Less than four minutes later, the Purple & White doubled its lead when Justin Aoyama '17 lofted a pass from the defensive third of the field to Martin who broke free down the right wing. Martin deked a defender and deposited the ball to the near post past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
  • At the 62:09 mark, Bryce Ciambella '17 linked up with Aidan Murray '18, whose final pass found Andrew Orozco '17. Orozco then finished with his second goal of the season inside the far post to give Amherst a 3-0 cushion. 
  • Singer and Martin finished with two shots on goal each for Amherst in the winning effort, while senior goalkeeper Thomas Bull needed just one save to preserve his eighth clean sheet of the campaign.
  • The stout Purple & White defense held Hamilton to zero shots in the second half as Amherst held a 12-3 advantage in the contest, including an 8-1 differential in shots on goal.
  • Continentals' goalkeeper Harris Pollack made four saves in the losing effort.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Amherst has now outscored its opponents, 23-2, and the Purple & White has posted eight shutouts on the season.
  • The loss for Hamilton halts a two-match win streak for the Continentals that includes a 2-1 (2OT) win over Tufts, and a 2-0 win over Ithaca.

  • Amherst returns to NESCAC action Tuesday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Connecticut College at 3:30 p.m. at Hitchcock Field.
