Box Score MIDDLEBURY , Vt. – Junior goalkeeper Holly Burwick stopped nine shots as the Amherst College women's soccer team upset NESCAC rival and third-ranked Middlebury College, 1-0 in its 2014 season-opener Sunday at Dragone Field.
Burwick was stellar between the posts as Amherst held the Panthers scoreless for the fourth consecutive meeting. They are now 3-0-1 against their conference foe since the 2011 campaign. With the win, the Jeffs open the season 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the NESCAC while Middlebury drops to 1-1 on the year and 0-1 in league play.
The Jeffs were outshot in the game, 18-6, but held strong defensively en route to the win. In the ninth minute, Jamie Soroka received a pass from Krystina Reynolds for a good look at net by Burwick denied the shot. The junior made another great diving save in the 26th minute to protect a strong opportunity by the home team.
At the 70:13 mark, Amherst got on the board with the game's only score. Jessy Hale '16 served the ball in when a miscommunication in the box led to the ball ricocheting off a Panther player into the back of the net.
Middlebury had several chances in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net as Burwick picked up the shutout win.
Amherst returns to the field Wednesday, Sept. 10 for the team's home opener against Mt. Holyoke at 5 p.m.
