Box Score SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Rachael Abernethy '16 and Hannah Guzzi '18 each delivered a second half goal as the 18th-ranked Amherst women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory on the road at Tufts on Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action.
With the win, Amherst improves to 6-1-0 on the season, 3-1-0 in NESCAC play, while Tufts moves to 4-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 in league action. The Jeffs have now won their fourth straight game, and recorded their sixth shutout of the season, and the fifth of the campaign for junior goalkeeper Holly Burwick who need to make just one save in the winning effort.
After a scoreless first period of action that saw Tufts edge Amherst in shots, 8-5, the Jeffs amplified the pressure on the Jumbo's goal in the second stanza, outshooting the hosts, 8-0.
The Purple & White's first breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when Abernethy found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
First-year Hannah Guzzi, who notched four shots in the game and two on target, struck for her team-leading fifth goal of the 2014 campaign inside of seven minutes remaining to give Amherst a 2-0 lead. Jessy Hale '16 picked up her first point of the season after distributing a pass to Guzzi, who capitalized on the opportunity.
Tufts edged the Jeffs in corner kicks in the first frame, 4-3, but the Purple & White earned five corners in the second half compared to zero for the Jumbos adding to Amherst's increased pressure.
Eileen McGarry recorded two saves in the losing effort for Tufts after facing four shots on frame. Catherine Greer provided the Jumbos' lone shot on net in the 31st minute, heading the ball towards the nylon, but Burwick was there to keep the game at 0-0.
Amherst returns to NESCAC play on Sunday, Sept. 28 when it hosts Bates at 12 p.m. at Hitchcock Field.
