Box Score AMHERST, Mass. - Amherst College's Emily Masten '17 scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 31st minute of play as the Jeffs notched a 1-0 victory over Lasell College in Sunday afternoon's non-league women's soccer game at Hitchcock Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 5-1-0 on the season, while Lasell moves to 4-3-0 overall.
Amherst applied pressure early in the contest and finally broke through when Alex Hart '15 sent a ball from the right wing into the box. Masten, playing up from her defensive position, corralled the ball in the box and blasted a shot into the left netting to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead at the 31:26 mark.
Masten's strike, her first of the season, was the only goal of the contest as the Purple & White played stellar defense, led by the efforts of Maya Jackson-Gibson '15, Ariana Twomey '15, Mel Stier '15, Jessy Hale '16 and Masten. Amherst limited Lasell to just two shots on target as junior net-minder Holly Burwick '16 only needed to make two saves. Burwick has now kept three straight clean sheets, and four total in six games so far in 2014.
The Lasers' best chance came late in the contest when Megan Cullen raced into the right side of the box but Jackson-Gibson executed a perfect sliding challenge and forced the ball out of bounds preventing a shot on goal.
The Jeffs fired 10 shots on frame, highlighted by Masten's sizzler in the first half. Lasell goalkeeper Sarah LeClair fended off nine other attempts by the Purple & White including four offerings from first-year offensive threat Hannah Guzzi.
Amherst returns to NESCAC action on Saturday, Sept. 27 when it travels to Tufts University for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
