Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore guard Ali Doswell scored 21 points as the second-ranked Amherst College women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Eastern Connecticut State University Thursday night at LeFrak Gymnasium, 66-51.
With the win, the Jeffs extend their consecutive home winning streak to 101 games as they improve to 5-0 on the year. The loss drops the Warriors to 4-3 this season, with all three losses coming against NESCAC competition.
In addition to her game-high 21 points, Doswell also grabbed seven rebounds. Marley Giddins '16 recorded her second double-double as she scored 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting with a game-high 12 rebounds. The junior, who set two career-highs her last time out, set another career-high with four blocks. Joining Doswell and Giddins in double-figures was guard Jaimie Renner '17 with 11 points and a game-high five assists.
Jill Ritrosky led Eastern Connecticut State with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe. She was the only player in double-figures for the visitors, as Jordyn Nappi and Shannon McCourt added nine and eight, respectively. Ritrosky also led the team in rebounding with seven boards as Erin Brooks, Julia DePoi and McCourt all grabbed six.
The Warriors took their first and only lead of the game early in the first half when Nappi hit one from downtown to put the visitor's ahead, 5-3 at the 18:10 mark. However, a lay-up by Giddins 20 seconds later sparked a 10-0 Amherst run.
After 10 minutes of back-and-forth action, the Jeffs took their first double-digit lead on a Doswell lay-up as they pulled ahead, 26-16 with 5:17 remaining until halftime.
At the 3:38 mark, Nappi once again hit one from behind-the-arc and cut the deficit to nine, however, another lay-up by Doswell on the Jeffs ensuing possession gave Amherst a 32-21 lead. After Nappi's three-pointer, the Jeffs went on a 10-0 run to close out the half as they took a commanding 40-21 lead into the break.
The Purple & White scored the first four points of the second half to continue the run and increase the margin to 23. After a three-pointer by Doswell at the 17:15 mark gave the Jeffs a 47-25 lead, the Warriors started their comeback. Ritrosky led the way as the visitors went on a 17-0 run in just under six minutes of play as they trailed 47-42 with 11:22 remaining in regulation.
Eastern Conn. State continued to put the pressure on Amherst and cut the deficit to four following another Ritrosky lay-up with under seven minutes to play. However, a free throw by Cheyenne Pritchard '16 followed by a lay-up and three-pointer from Doswell put the Jeffs back up by 10 as they never looked back, holding a double-digit lead the final 4:21 of the game en route to the 66-51 win.
The Jeffs return to the court Saturday, Dec. 6 for a non-conference road game against Bridgewater State beginning at 2 p.m.
