Abernethy Nets a Pair as Women's Soccer Bests Wesleyan, 2-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Rachael Abernethy '16 netted a pair of goals as the 15th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over NESCAC rival Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon in Middletown, Conn.

With the win, Amherst improves to 11-2-0 overall, 7-1-0 in NESCAC play. Wesleyan moves to 1-9-2 on the season, 0-6-1.

After a scoreless first half that featured a 7-0 shot differential in favor of Amherst, the Jeffs netted the first of their two goals in the 76th minute of action as she received a feed from Emma Rothkopf '15.

At the 83:02 mark, Abernethy struck again, this time following a delivery from Megan Kim '16 to give the Purple & White a 2-0 victory.

Abernethy took three of the Jeffs' 10 shots with two on target, while junior goalkeeper Holly Burwick made three saves en route to her eighth clean sheet of the season.

Maddy Chabot took two of Wesleyan's six shots in the losing effort, while Jessica Tollman made four saves (all in the first half).

Amherst edged the Cardinals, 10-6 in shots despite Wesleyan owning a 6-3 advantage in the second half.

The Purple & White returns to NESCAC action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 when it travels to Conn. College for a 3:45 p.m. showdown with the Camels.
