Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Amanda Brisco '14 had a hand in both goals as the sixth-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 2-0 win over previously undefeated Hamilton College Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.
After 76 scoreless minutes, Brisco put Amherst on the board at 76:09 and assisted Maggie Belnap '15 at 77:45. The Lord Jeffs (4-0-0, 2-0-0 NESCAC) held an 18-10 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corners, while Holly Burwick '16 made one save to help Amherst record its fourth consecutive shutout.
Liza Gergenti '14 stopped eight shots for the Continentals (5-1-0, 3-1-0 NESCAC), who suffered their first setback of the season.
Amherst will be tested tomorrow when it travels to take on ninth-ranked Middlebury College (5-0-0, 3-0-0 NESCAC) in a pivotal conference matchup. Hamilton will take the week off before hosting Bates College next Saturday.
Each of Amherst's first-half scoring opportunities was thwarted by Gergenti, who made five of her saves in the opening 45 minutes. Hamilton nearly got on the board with 21 minutes remaining in the second period when Rachel Hirsch '15 took a cross from Hannah Withiam '16 and put a low shot on net, but Burwick knocked the ball away and recovered it after it hit the post.
After a back-and-forth five minutes, Brisco finally broke the tie with an unassisted goal as 13:51 remained in regulation. She followed up with a beautiful cross that made its way to Belnap, whose header snuck underneath the crossbar and beat Gergenti to make it a 2-0 game.
Saturday marked another strong performance by the Lord Jeff defense, which matched last year's impressive start by not allowing a goal in the first four games of the season.
