LEWISTON, Maine – A pair of second-half goals helped the third-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team open its conference schedule with a 2-0 win at Bates College's Russell Street Field on Saturday.

Federico Sucre '13 assisted Jae Heo '14 on the game's opening goal and added an insurance tally for the Lord Jeffs (3-0-0, 1-0-0 NESCAC), who bumped their winning streak against Bates (1-2-0, 0-2-0 NESCAC) to eight games.

This was the third consecutive shutout for Amherst, which has outscored its 2012 opponents by a combined 10-0 and out-shot them by a 75-12 margin.

Thomas Bull '16 played all 90 minutes in goal to record the shutout, but he did not have to make any saves.

The Jeffs held a 26-1 edge in shots today, including a 12-0 difference in the first half, but they didn't get on the scoreboard until seven minutes had passed in the second period. A shot by Sucre clanged off the crossbar and bounced back to Heo, who cleaned up the rebound and made it a 1-0 game at 52:00.

The 6-foot-5 Sucre gave Amherst a 2-0 lead at 77:45, heading in a nicely placed cross from Max Fikke '14 from just beyond the right end of the Bates penalty area.

Bates first-year Sam Polito played a strong game in goal for the Bobcats and finished with eight saves.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Sept. 22, when they host Hamilton College at 2:30 p.m. on Hitchcock Field.
