Jeffs Win NESCAC Match at Home Over Bates 3-1

AMHERST, MA The Amherst men's soccer team completed a come-from-behind victory over NESCAC rival Bates College on Saturday afternoon, besting the Bobcats 3-1. The Jeffs welcomed back their 2005 scoring leader and co-captain Mike Wohl '07 (Northampton, MA), who used his speed at forward to net the game-winner in the 58th minute.

The Bates Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the 25th minute when sophomore forward Greg Nelson (Greenwich, CT) netted an unassisted blast from 25 yards, past Amherst goalie Jeff Grover (Framingham, MA). The Jeffs were down, but not out and rallied back scoring two goals, just 2:36 seconds apart just 10 minutes into the second stanza. Senior co-captain Rob Madden (Woodbridge, CT) scored the equalizer, while Wohl was set thru the defense on a breakaway by Jake Duker's '09 (Newton, MA) pass shortly after.

The Jeffs tacked on an insurance goal in the 66th minute when first-year midfielder Matt Lewis (Wayland, MA) found the net for his first collegiate points off a Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) corner and junior Ryan O'Donnell's (Belchertown, MA) flick, both players earning assists, O'Donnell's second of the match.

Grover made a save in net for the Jeffs, while his counterpart Aaron Schlecher (Londonberry, NH) had three saves for Bates.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday September 20, 2006 when they travel to non-conference foe MIT at 4:30 p.m.
