Wohl Hat Trick Leads Jeffs Past Colby, 4-3

WATERVILLE, ME - Junior forward Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) tallied a hat trick to lead the Amherst College men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory at conference rival Colby College on Saturday. The Jeffs improved to 6-3-2 (3-2-1 NESCAC) on the season, while the Mules fell to 5-6 (1-6 NESCAC).

Amherst opened the scoring at the 18-minute mark when rookie Jake Duker (Newton, MA) dished a slick pass to classmate Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica), who capitalized to notch his team-leading fifth goal of the year. The Jeffs continued to pressure and added a second score in the waning minutes of the period, as Wohl buried his first goal of the day off a feed from senior Adrien de Bontin (Kenilworth, IL) to increase the lead to 2-0 heading into the break.

Colby responded eight minutes into the second stanza when sophomore Mike Butler (St. John's, New Brunswick) posted his first goal of the season to bring the Mules within one, but the Jeffs turned up the heat and Wohl found the back of the net again at the 69-minute mark off a Lynch feed. Colby answered with two goals in quick succession just four minutes later to knot the score, but Wohl wasn't finished for the day, as he completed the hat trick in the 79th minute after a Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) dish to clinch the victory for Amherst.

Amherst senior goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) finished with two saves in the victory, while Colby junior netminder Josh Kahane (Newton, MA) grabbed five in a losing effort.

Amherst returns to action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
