12th-Ranked Jeffs Tie No. 23 Eastern Conn. 1-1

AMHERST, MA - In a battle of two nationally ranked squads, the Amherst College women's soccer team, ranked 12th in the nation, played 23rd-ranked non-league foe Eastern Connecticut State University to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Wednesday. Reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) scored her third goal in two games for Amherst (1-0-1), while junior Jenn Orme (Centereach, NY) found the back of the net for Eastern Conn. (5-0-1).

Amherst's day was marked by exceptional goalie play, as sophomore netminder Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) tallied 16 saves and turned away a bevy of legitimate scoring opportunities. Most notably, Crowell turned in a sliding save on a point-blank offering by Eastern Conn. junior Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, CT) 16:25 into the opening period, and punched a Jen Ferrari (Coventry, RI) laser up over the crossbar roughly 10 minutes later to preserve an early 0-0 tie. She was stellar in both overtimes as well, again denying Buzzell with a sprawling save in the first extra session, and victimizing Ferrari a second time with a spectacular sliding stop.

The host Jeffs opened the scoring just over 34 minutes into the game, when the red-hot Showler headed a crossing pass from junior Lyn Wojcik (E. Brookfield, MA) past Eastern Conn. goalie Allison Sumecki (Northford, CT), who finished with nine saves in 110 minutes for the Warriors. Easter Conn. then knotted the score in the 82nd minute on Orme's third goal of the season, a chip shot into the top right corner of the net off a feed from Ferrari.

Amherst returns to action Saturday 11 a.m., hosting NESCAC rival Bates College.
