CONCORD, MA - The Amherst College men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Bates College at the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts on Tuesday. Bates junior Philip Johnson (W. Hartford, CT) and first-year Brent Morin (Hanover, NH) each scored as the Bobcats improved to 9-3-1 (4-3-1 NESCAC), while Amherst fell to 10-3 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
The Jeffs nearly took the lead just under four minutes into play, but Bates senior keeper James Kenly (Boxford, MA) saved Amherst sophomore forward Mike Wohl's (Northampton, MA) breakaway shot. Johnson tallied the game-winning goal at the 16:44-mark as junior Terence O'Connell (Greenwich, CT) lofted a free kick near the far right post and Johnson converted the header.
Amherst junior Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) had a pair of near scores after the break, hitting the crossbar just 3:32 into the second half and sending a picturesque shot towards the upper left corner of the goal with just over 18 minutes remaining, which was narrowly punched away by Kenly. Morin added the insurance goal at the 77:53-mark as he tucked a shot just inside the left post off a feed from sophomore George Carr (Concord, MA).
Kenly finished with six saves, while junior Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) and senior Dan Glenn (Berkeley, CA) split time in goal for Amherst, collecting a combined four saves.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College.
