Jeffs Hand 23rd-Ranked Bowdoin First Defeat, 3-1

AMHERST, MA - Junior forward Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season, while sophomore forward Margaret Chute (Pawtucket, RI) knocked home the game-winner with 2:37 left in regulation, to lead the Amherst College women's soccer team to its first conference win of the season, 3-1, over previously-undefeated and 23rd-ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday.

Harmeling opened the scoring in the 13th minute off a nifty feed from junior midfielder Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ont.), and the score remained 1-0 until Bowdoin senior Michal Shapiro (Newton, MA) headed home a Cedar Goldman (Newton, MA) corner kick at 84:30. Chute responded with the deciding tally just under three minutes later, assisted by senior tri-captain Jenny Rossman (Newton, MA), and Harmeling added an insurance goal inside the final minute to set the final score at 3-1.

Amherst first-year goalie Jeanette Crowell (San Rafael, CA) preserved the win with six saves as the Jeffs improve to 4-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NESCAC with their first conference win. Junior Anna Shapell (Cape Elizabeth, ME) finished with five saves in defeat. Bowdoin drops to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Wheaton College.
