Men's Soccer

18th-Ranked Jeffs Blank Babson, 5-0

AMHERST, MA - The 18th-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team shut out visiting Babson College 5-0 on Wednesday, improving to 4-1 on the season. First-year Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) scored the first two goals on passes from senior quad-captain Frank Perry (Hartford, CT) and then repaid the favor, feeding Perry for the third score.

The Jeffs scored early and often as Wohl put home the first goal on a breakaway off a throw-in from Perry at 7:03, and added his second exactly two minutes later when Perry found him in the box, where he was able to beat the keeper for his third goal of the season. Junior defender Andrew Syfu (Hobart, IN) lofted a free kick to Wohl in the 13th minute, who turned and lobbed the ball over the keeper's head where Perry tapped it home. Senior Vivian Johnson (Kingston, Jamaica) assisted sophomore Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) on a beautiful bank shot off the left post from 20 yards out at the 54:25 mark, and Johnson finished off the rout in the 76th minute when he slammed home a shot from the top of the box off a crossing pass from first-year Phillip Boulay (Norfolk, MA).

The Amherst defense, led by senior quad-captain Michael York (Natick, MA), classmate Brad Coffey (Yarmouth, ME) and sophomore Jeremy Kelley (Randolph, MA), allowed only three shots to the visiting Beavers, all of which were saved by sophomore Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA). First-year Mohamed Zeidan (Eden Prairie, MN) also saw time in net for the Jeffs. Babson goalkeeper Tom Anderson (Naperville, IL) had seven saves in the loss as the Beavers fall to 3-3-2 on the year.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. when they host NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
