Roberts Leads Women's Soccer Past Smith, 2-1

NORTHAMPTON, MA - Junior Shell Roberts' (Philadelphia, PA) first career goal turned out to be the game-winner on Wednesday, as the Amherst College women's soccer team gathered its first victory of the season, 2-1, at non-league foe Smith College. Fellow junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) also scored for the Jeffs, who evened their record at 1-1.

The Jeffs struck first in the 11th minute when junior Tracy Montigny (E. Granby, CT) led a breakaway and fed Harmeling for her second goal of the season. However, senior Morgan Theis evened the score for Smith about 10 minutes later off of a corner kick.

Roberts' game-winner hit net in the 63rd minute, unassisted, sealing the victory for the Jeffs. The Amherst defense allowed only seven shots on goal in a remarkable effort.

First-year keeper Jeanette Crowell (San Rafael, CA) had four saves for Amherst, while Smith's Monica Jarman collected eight saves in defeat.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC rival Tufts University.
