AMHERST, MA - Behind second half goals by juniors Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ont.) and Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA), the Amherst College women's soccer team improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play with a 2-0 shutout win over visiting 20th-ranked NESCAC foe Middlebury College on Saturday. Amherst rookie goalie Jeanette Crowell (San Rafael, CA) turned away three Middlebury shots en route to her first career shutout.
After a scoreless opening half, the host Jeffs cracked the scoring column at 52:06 when junior Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) connected with Showler for a breakaway tally into the left corner of the net. Harmeling added her team-leading 10th goal of the season just under 30 minutes later off a nifty feed from sophomore forward Margaret Chute (Pawtucket, RI).
Junior Els Van Woert (Shelburne, VT) played the entire game and finished with three saves for Middlebury, which fell to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play with the loss.
Amherst returns to action next Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC foe Colby College.
