AMHERST, MA - After downing non-league foe Smith College, 2-0, on Thursday the Amherst College women's soccer team - ranked second in the latest NSCAA/Adidas National Poll - returned to Hitchcock Field on Saturday and fell to visiting NESCAC foe Tufts University, 1-0. Jumbo sophomore midfielder Jen Baldwin (Medway, MA) netted the game-winner 28:46 into the contest.
The Jeffs controlled the early part of the game but failed to capitalize on a few legitimate scoring opportunities. Sophomore striker Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) took a feed from junior midfielder Jenny Rossman (Newton Highlands, MA) and fired a shot just wide of the goal less than 15 minutes into the contest. Moments later, sophomore midfielder Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) booted a rocket that sailed just over the crossbar. Shortly thereafter, Baldwin capitalized as she dribbled past an Amherst defender and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net after taking a feed from senior defender Cara Glassanos (Hingham, MA).
Senior co-captain goalkeeper Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) kept the Jeffs in the contest, smothering a point blank shot off the foot of junior forward Becca Doigan (W. Bloomfield, MA) to begin the second half. Amherst's best chance came in the 66th minute when sophomore midfielder Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) blasted a sharp-angled shot over the top of the goal.
Diamond finished the contest with eight saves while Jumbo sophomore goaltender Meg McCourt (Rochester, NY) finished with nine. With the loss, the Jeffs fall to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play while Tufts improves to 1-1 and 1-0.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Eastern Connecticut State University.
