Morgan Wins 200th as Women's Soccer Blanks Smith, 2-0

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College women's soccer Head Coach Michelle Morgan notched her 200th career victory as the Jeffs downed visiting non-league foe Smith College, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. With the victory, Amherst improves to 2-0 overall while the Pioneers drop to 2-1.

The Jeffs pierced the scoring column 16:20 into the opening half when sophomore midfielder Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) tallied her second goal of the season, taking a feed from junior midfielder Jenny Rossman (Newton Highlands, MA) and blasting a low shot into the back of the net. The hosts struck again, shortly thereafter, when sophomore midfielder Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) gathered a rebound off the crossbar and chipped a shot past Pioneer sophomore goalkeeper Monica Jarman (Berkeley, CA) giving the Jeffs a 2-0 advantage at the break.

The second half saw Amherst continually maintain constant defensive pressure. Senior midfielder Katelyn McCabe (West Hartford, CT) combined with first-year back Lyn Wojcik (E. Brookfield, MA) and sophomore back Leslie Curren (Arlington, MA) to help hold Smith to just four shots in the contest as senior co-captain goaltender Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) earned her 26th career shutout.

Morgan's overall record improves to 200-106-36 in her 25th season at the helm of the Amherst program. She has guided the team to 10 Little Three Championships, three NIAC tournaments, seven ECAC tournaments (including the school's first-ever ECAC Championship in 2000), six NCAA tournament berths, and a pair of NCAA Final Four appearances along the way.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Tufts University.
